History
ZSX stands for “Zip-Stitch Surgical Access and Closure.” ZSX Medical was founded by Eric Rugart, Dan Mazzucco, and Feta Med, Inc. Founders still own more than 99% of the company. Feta Med is a perinatal supplier of medical devices to over 300 U.S. hospitals that has been doing business for 43 years. ZSX Medical was founded to improve upon sutures for large-incision surgical closure and was formally created in June 2009.
In the fall of 2009, ZSX Medical began manufacturing and testing prototypes of Zip-Stitch™-C, showing proof-of-concept for cesarean delivery in May 2010 in bench-top and small animal studies. ZSX engaged FDA via Pre-IDE correspondence, and has completed a market survey of ob/gyns to better understand the product adoption landscape. With the assistance of our ob/gyn colleagues, we identified a quicker, less expensive, less risky route to market in laparoscopic hysterectomy in February 2011. Given the attractiveness of this opportunity, we have turned our hysterectomy. Based on the work the company had done to date, ZSX Medical was selected as the Company Most Likely to Succeed in the 2011 New Jersey Technology Council Venture Fair.
